What is Gloom used for in Mortal Shell 2?
Section titled “What is Gloom used for in Mortal Shell 2?”In the current launch build, Gloom is your Harbinger leveling currency at Beacons. You gain it mainly from enemy kills, and you drop your carried Gloom on death until you recover it.
Current launch guides also agree on an important distinction:
- Gloom is for Harbinger level-ups.
- Coins are separate for merchants and some upgrade actions.
- Glimpse is used to deepen Shell Bond tiers.
- Weapon, sidearm, and Tarstone progression also use separate systems and materials.
So if your goal is “level up fast,” this page focuses on farming routes that feed Harbinger levels first.
Best early Gloom farm at a glance
Section titled “Best early Gloom farm at a glance”| Farm | When available | Approx. Gloom per run | Difficulty | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Widow’s Overlook loop | Very early (first Fainweald area) | ~450–500 (community estimate) | Low to medium | Better after nearby miniboss pressure is removed |
| Gate Beacon adds loop | Early-mid Fainweald | Lower per run than boss loop; steady trickle | Low to medium | No special infusion required |
| Gate Beacon elite/boss loop | Early-mid Fainweald, after route setup | ~2000–2056 from commonly cited launch videos/guides | Medium | Best with sidearm + Emberseed burn setup |
| Sunken Village nearby enemies | Mid-early once reached | Consistent but lower than optimized Gate loops | Low | No special setup needed |
These are launch-window community estimates, not official developer tables. Exact return varies by setup and whether Gloom-boosting effects such as the Gloombound Stone are active. The stone is an optional Gloom boost for any of these loops, not a route requirement.
Use the Gloombound Stone to increase Gloom gains
Section titled “Use the Gloombound Stone to increase Gloom gains”The Gloombound Stone is a Support Tarstone. It is not required to farm Gloom, but it is the current launch pickup most directly tied to increasing Gloom from enemy kills. If you have it, slot it into a Shell Support slot before you run any of the loops on this page.
What does the Gloombound Stone do?
Section titled “What does the Gloombound Stone do?”Current launch guides describe the same core effect: while the Gloombound Stone is equipped, slain foes drop more Gloom. It is a passive Support effect on your Shell, not an Infusion you fire like Emberseed.
It is not the same item as the Gloombound Flame used for Night Mode. You do need it equipped for the bonus to apply. Launch sources also describe Tarstones as upgradeable later at the Tarforge after you have the Etching Needle; higher ranks are said to increase effectiveness, but public writeups do not consistently verify a first-rank percentage, so this page does not invent one. Current descriptions apply the bonus to slain foes in general and do not document a separate enemy-type restriction.
Where to find the Gloombound Stone
Section titled “Where to find the Gloombound Stone”Nearest reliable landmark: Blackridge Pass Beacon, north of Widow’s Overlook.
- From Widow’s Overlook, head north and rest at Blackridge Pass Beacon.
- Continue north through Blackridge Cliffs to the stone arch blocked by corruption.
- Use Mether’s Breath to cleanse that wall, then enter Stones of Remembrance (the greener graveyard / garden area).
- Loot the bone chest in the ruins there for the Gloombound Stone.
If you are already at Stonebled Gate in Sanguine Caverns, current location notes place the same chest in Stones of Remembrance southeast of that beacon, by the water-edge ruins.
No source lists a named boss kill as the chest’s direct requirement, but the south approach is progression-gated by the corruption wall and Mether’s Breath. Current launch sources treat this as a world chest, not a documented permanently missable pickup.
Do you need it for Gloom farming?
Section titled “Do you need it for Gloom farming?”No. Widow’s Overlook, Gate Beacon, and Sunken Village all work without it. The stone only improves efficiency once you have a Support slot free.
Early players should not detour through Blackridge corruption just to start farming. Pick it up when you are already pushing north, then equip it for every later loop.
Widow’s Overlook early Gloom farm
Section titled “Widow’s Overlook early Gloom farm”Widow’s Overlook is the earliest practical anchor for many players, especially if you just entered Fainweald and want levels before harder pushes north.
Why use it
Section titled “Why use it”- You reach it naturally on your first regional route.
- It is simple to repeat with short travel.
- It does not require a specialized burn build.
Conditions and route
Section titled “Conditions and route”Community launch guides describe this as a repeatable adds loop in the Widow’s Overlook area, commonly done after stabilizing the nearby pressure from the Great Arbiter of Flesh side path. In practice:
- Rest at Widow’s Overlook Beacon.
- Clear the nearby enemy pack efficiently.
- Return to the Beacon.
- Rest to respawn and repeat.
Reset and returns
Section titled “Reset and returns”- Reset: Resting at the Beacon respawns the loop.
- Approx. return: Some launch guides cite about 450–500 Gloom per lap. Treat this as a community-reported estimate; exact return varies by setup and whether Gloom-boosting effects are active.
- Run time: Usually short laps, depending on your route comfort and whether you fully clear or only take fast targets.
This is usually the best Beginner option when you want stable early levels without relying on a specific infusion setup.
Gate Beacon Gloom farm
Section titled “Gate Beacon Gloom farm”Gate Beacon has two practical loops: a safer adds loop and a faster elite/boss loop.
A) Safer Gate Beacon adds loop (no burn needed)
Section titled “A) Safer Gate Beacon adds loop (no burn needed)”If your damage is still low or you have not set up Emberseed, run the smaller enemies around Gate Beacon.
- Rest at Gate Beacon.
- Clear the nearby weaker enemies.
- Return and rest to reset.
This route is a solid Safer bridge between pure early farming and the faster elite route.
B) Faster Gate Beacon elite/boss loop
Section titled “B) Faster Gate Beacon elite/boss loop”This is the widely shared “level fast” route in launch-week guides.
What you need
Section titled “What you need”- Access to Gate Beacon route
- A reliable sidearm kill pattern (many guides use the starting Naylshotte shotgun-style sidearm)
- Emberseed Stone for burn infusion on sidearm shots (strongly recommended for fast clears)
Emberseed location references currently point to the Passenger’s Shrine path tied to Mushroom Village Beacon cleansing.
Loop pattern
Section titled “Loop pattern”- Rest at Gate Beacon.
- Infuse sidearm with Emberseed burn.
- Sprint to the elite/boss target.
- Burst it down (often with sidearm shots + follow-up hit).
- Return to Beacon and rest to reset.
Reset and returns
Section titled “Reset and returns”- Reset: Beacon rest.
- Approx. return: commonly cited around 2000–2056 Gloom per run for the main target. Treat this as a community-reported estimate; exact return varies by setup and whether Gloom-boosting effects are active.
- Run time: usually under a minute in optimized demonstrations, but varies heavily by execution.
This is the primary Faster option once your build and route consistency are ready.
Sunken Village Gloom farm
Section titled “Sunken Village Gloom farm”Sunken Village is the fallback loop when you want lower-risk repetition and less setup overhead.
Why use it
Section titled “Why use it”- Nearby respawning enemies are easy to repeat.
- No Emberseed requirement to begin farming.
- Works well between progression pushes when you want a calmer grind.
- Rest at Sunken Village Beacon.
- Clear nearby enemies close to the beacon path.
- Return and rest.
- Repeat.
Reset and returns
Section titled “Reset and returns”- Reset: Beacon rest.
- Approx. return: launch guides describe it as steady and safer, but generally below optimized Gate elite returns.
- Best use case: build-up levels and consistency, especially if you are not yet comfortable with higher-pressure elite loops.
Which Gloom farm is fastest?
Section titled “Which Gloom farm is fastest?”For most current launch-route writeups, Gate Beacon elite/boss loop is the fastest when your sidearm/burn setup is ready and your clear speed is consistent.
For safer progression:
- Start with Widow’s Overlook (or Gate adds) when undergeared.
- Rotate into Sunken Village for low-risk repetition.
- Move to Gate elite for faster chunks once your damage and confidence are up.
Some current launch guides and videos estimate very high hourly rates for optimized loops, but actual returns depend heavily on execution speed, routing discipline, and setup quality.
How to reset enemies and repeat a farm
Section titled “How to reset enemies and repeat a farm”All three routes rely on the same core reset:
- Kill your target pack (or elite).
- Return to the nearest Beacon.
- Rest.
- Re-run the same short path.
Two practical tips:
- Keep the loop short and repeatable instead of over-clearing side paths.
- Spend Gloom at Beacon level-up screens regularly so a death run does not erase a large unspent pool.
How much Gloom do you need to level up?
Section titled “How much Gloom do you need to level up?”Costs scale upward by level, so there is no single fixed amount. Launch guides consistently describe an increasing curve, with sample launch-window values around:
- roughly ~1300 for early first upgrades (build-dependent reporting),
- around ~1600 for level 2 → 3 in one published launch example.
Treat exact values as live in-game numbers at your Beacon screen, and use route loops to top up before boss attempts.
Best way to spend Gloom early
Section titled “Best way to spend Gloom early”Early on, the practical rule is:
- Farm until you can afford at least one level.
- Spend immediately at a Beacon.
- Re-enter risky routes.
This protects you from corpse-loss swings and gives compounding damage/survivability gains for later loops.
If you used the Prologue skip route, this is one of the most useful first follow-up loops to stabilize your first few levels quickly.
What is the best early Gloom farm in Mortal Shell 2?
Section titled “What is the best early Gloom farm in Mortal Shell 2?”For low-risk early play, Widow’s Overlook or Sunken Village loops are easier to sustain. For higher returns, Gate Beacon elite loop is usually stronger once set up.
Do I need Emberseed Stone to farm Gloom?
Section titled “Do I need Emberseed Stone to farm Gloom?”No. You can farm with basic enemy loops first. Emberseed mainly improves the speed and consistency of the faster Gate elite route.
Where is the Gloombound Stone?
Section titled “Where is the Gloombound Stone?”In Stones of Remembrance, north of Blackridge Pass Beacon. The south approach uses Mether’s Breath to cleanse the corruption-blocked stone arch, then loot the bone chest in the ruins. If you are already at Stonebled Gate, current notes place the same chest southeast of that beacon.
Does the Gloombound Stone increase Gloom drops?
Section titled “Does the Gloombound Stone increase Gloom drops?”Yes. Current launch guides describe it as a Support Tarstone that makes slain foes drop more Gloom while it is equipped on your Shell. Public sources do not agree on a verified first-rank percentage.
Do I need the Gloombound Stone to farm Gloom?
Section titled “Do I need the Gloombound Stone to farm Gloom?”No. It is an optional efficiency pickup, not a requirement for Widow’s Overlook, Gate Beacon, or Sunken Village. Farm those loops first if you are still early, then equip the stone once you have it.
Is Widow’s Overlook farm available immediately?
Section titled “Is Widow’s Overlook farm available immediately?”It is an early-area route, but performance improves once you stabilize nearby threats and run a short repeatable path from the beacon.
Is 135K Gloom per hour guaranteed?
Section titled “Is 135K Gloom per hour guaranteed?”No. That figure appears in some launch videos, but it depends on near-perfect loop speed and setup. Per-run estimates are usually more reliable than one fixed hourly claim.
Can I level up at any Beacon?
Section titled “Can I level up at any Beacon?”After leveling unlocks at Marrow Keep, guides describe level-up availability at subsequent beacons, with Gloom spent directly in the Beacon menu.
