The Crypt Key is in the ruined structure at Desolate Peak, beside Baghead and the entrance to Illusionist’s Cache. It opens the locked Hall of Echoes door in eastern Fainweald, in the landmark cluster around Grisha Hunting Grounds and Stones of Remembrance. The key and its door are far apart, so plan on crossing Fainweald rather than searching for the lock near Baghead.

Travel to Desolate Peak in western Fainweald and find Baghead’s throne. Enter the ruined building directly opposite him. The entrance to Illusionist’s Cache is inside that structure.

Inspect the table, shelf, or counter around and above the Illusionist’s Cache entrance. Current launch guides describe the exact pickup surface differently, but they agree on the building and dungeon-entrance landmark. A nearby Tattered Note can help confirm that you are searching the intended structure. Interact with the key to add Crypt Key to your inventory.

If you have already reached the Citadel of Penance, one reported approach is to follow the sloping path to the lower cliffside, pass the Bloodcursed Lithopod area, and use the archway jump-off toward Baghead’s side of Desolate Peak. Use the Beacons and fast travel guide if you need to establish a safer return route first.

Use it at the locked Hall of Echoes entrance in the eastern/northeastern Fainweald landmark cluster near Grisha Hunting Grounds and Stones of Remembrance.

The directional descriptions around Grisha differ between current guides, so use the named landmarks and the locked stone doorway rather than relying on a single “north” or “south” instruction.

  1. Fast travel to Blackridge Pass Beacon.
  2. Go northeast toward Shattered Beacon, the route associated with the Proxima Shell.
  3. Continue east. If corruption blocks the passage, cleanse it before trying to reach the Stones of Remembrance side.
  4. Follow the opened route to the Hall of Echoes doorway and interact with the lock.
  5. Confirm the prompt to spend the Crypt Key. Current launch coverage describes it as a single-use key, so do not expect the item to remain available after the door opens.

The opened steps lead down into the Hall of Echoes dungeon. The key does not open Blackmarrow Shade chests; those are a separate key system covered in the Blackmarrow Keys guide.

How do you solve the Hall of Echoes puzzle?

Section titled “How do you solve the Hall of Echoes puzzle?”

The Hall’s main route uses hidden walls, a floor panel, a bell, and a movable stone object.

  1. Ride the lift down and clear the first enemies.
  2. At the end of the first passage, strike the left wall to reveal the route forward.
  3. In the next area, strike the wall to the left of the floor switch. Clear the enemies near the Gloom Tree; a Laterite is reported in this section.
  4. Return to the floor panel and stand on it to open the next room.
  5. Look for the bell and shoot it with a ranged attack. The bell creates a bridge or path across the gap.
  6. Cross to the stone statue/block and push it onto the floor panel.
  7. Enter the final room and collect the reward chest.

If the route looks blocked, look for the pale breakable-wall markings and check the area around the floor switch. The bell is the progression trigger; the stone object is the weight that keeps the final panel active.

The core Hall rewards supported by more than one current guide are:

Reward Use
Winterglass Gem A sellable gem; current guide coverage reports a value of 1,000 coins when sold to Merrick.
Dorsalite Upgrade material used by the Tarforge for weapons and sidearms. See the Tarforge guide.

An additional Laterite pickup is reported near the Gloom Tree during the puzzle route. Treat it as an optional route pickup, not the final chest’s headline reward.

Source-disputed. GameSpot and AllThings How report a Sheephead Totem in the Hall’s reward room, obtained by killing the sheep. Gamer Guides’ Hall of Echoes walkthrough lists Winterglass Gem and Dorsalite but does not list the totem, and its separate Alchemist’s Workshop walkthrough places a Sheephead Totem there. Treat the Hall placement as version- or source-sensitive and verify the room in your build; do not count it as a confirmed Hall reward from this page.

No. The key is at Desolate Peak in western Fainweald, while Hall of Echoes is in the eastern/northeastern landmark cluster near Grisha Hunting Grounds and Stones of Remembrance.

Is Illusionist’s Cache the Hall of Echoes entrance?

Section titled “Is Illusionist’s Cache the Hall of Echoes entrance?”

No. Illusionist’s Cache is the dungeon entrance used as the landmark for finding the key. The Crypt Key opens a different locked doorway: Hall of Echoes.

No. Hall of Echoes uses the Crypt Key. Blackmarrow Keys open Shade chests around Marrow Keep.

What should I do if the key is not on the table?

Section titled “What should I do if the key is not on the table?”

Search the full shelf/counter area around the Illusionist’s Cache entrance and confirm that the inventory does not already contain Crypt Key. The exact pickup surface is described differently across launch sources, so do not treat one furniture label as a guaranteed position. If the structure is still empty in your build, re-check the current patch and avoid inventing a replacement location.

This page is needs-verification because the route is supported by current launch-window guides rather than first-party developer documentation, and the Sheephead Totem placement is disputed.
