What is the Mortal Shell II Open Beta?
Section titled “What is the Mortal Shell II Open Beta?”The Mortal Shell II Open Beta is a free, limited preview of Cold Symmetry and Playstack’s sequel. The official Steam listing describes it as the opening three hours of the game, with select progress carrying forward into the full release.
It is listed as a separate demo/beta application, not as the full game. The official website currently points players to “Play the Beta” alongside pre-order messaging for the August 20, 2026 launch.
This page covers how to play the current Open Beta. It is not a complete game guide, and it does not claim the preview represents the finished campaign.
When is the Open Beta available?
Section titled “When is the Open Beta available?”Checked on 2026-08-11:
- Steam lists the Open Beta with a June 5, 2026 release date.
- The console beta was reported as going live on July 31, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That timing comes from press coverage of the rollout, not from a dated Xbox or PlayStation store confirmation saved with this Guide.
- An Xbox Store listing for Mortal Shell II Open Beta is currently available. Push Square reports a matching free listing on the PlayStation Store.
The Steam Open Beta page still presents the build as available. It does not publish a confirmed shutdown date. The full game remains scheduled for August 20, 2026. Until Cold Symmetry or Playstack announce otherwise, treat availability as current but time-limited.

| PlayStation 5 | Search the PlayStation Store for Mortal Shell II Open Beta and install the free listing |
| Xbox Series X|S | Download Mortal Shell II Open Beta from the Xbox Store |
You do not need to pre-purchase the full game to try the preview. The beta and the full release listing are separate store products.
Steam’s Open Beta page also notes that this is an in-development build. Bugs, performance issues, and other rough edges are expected; the listing asks players to report problems through the dedicated Discord channel.
What content is in the Open Beta?
Section titled “What content is in the Open Beta?”Official store copy for the current preview is consistent across Steam and Xbox:
- Access to the opening hours, from the Prologue into the first explorable region
- Roughly the first three hours of the game, per Steam’s short description
- Possessing fallen Shells and beginning the Harbinger’s journey
- Cleansing beacons, optional dungeons, hidden mini-bosses, and challenges
- A route that presses onward toward Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods
- Discovery of Tiel, the Acolyte, described as one of eight playable Shells in the full game
The Open Beta is therefore an early slice of the interconnected world, not a full-game unlock. Optional dungeons and mini-bosses are mentioned by the store pages; this Guide does not turn that list into an invented map or boss roster.
For combat context around the named encounter, see the current Magdalena Open Beta guide.
