Where is the Gloombound Flame in Mortal Shell 2?

Section titled “Where is the Gloombound Flame in Mortal Shell 2?”

The Gloombound Flame is in Fainweald, near the Widow’s Overlook beacon, in the Great Arbiter of Flesh arena.

The pickup is not just somewhere in the wider region. Video and transcript evidence place it near the Great Arbiter, beside a ritual stone / stone marker with a visible glowing pickup. Esoterickk’s gameplay footage shows the interact prompt at that marker, and the Gamer Guides transcript describes the Flame as being near Great Arbiter on a ritual stone.

The Gloombound Flame pickup is beside the ritual stone marker inside the Great Arbiter of Flesh arena. Gameplay footage via Esoterickk.

Use these landmarks:

  • Marrow Keep: the route context after the Prologue
  • Widow’s Overlook: the nearby beacon / fast-travel point
  • Great Arbiter of Flesh arena: the combat space where the miniboss is waiting
  • Ritual stone / stone marker: the specific pickup landmark inside the arena

Follow only the route supported by the current video and transcript evidence:

  1. Complete the Prologue and reach Marrow Keep.
  2. Use the beacon / teleport route north from Marrow Keep to Widow’s Overlook.
  3. Move from Widow’s Overlook into the nearby Great Arbiter of Flesh arena.
  4. Look for the ritual stone / upright stone marker with the glowing Gloombound Flame pickup.
  5. Pick up the Gloombound Flame, then leave or return to Marrow Keep.

The available footage does not support a more precise turn-by-turn path through every doorway or slope, so this guide keeps the route to the confirmed landmarks.

Do you have to beat Great Arbiter of Flesh?

Section titled “Do you have to beat Great Arbiter of Flesh?”

No, based on current launch gameplay video evidence.

Gloombound Flame acquired while the Great Arbiter of Flesh is still alive in the arena.
Launch gameplay footage shows the Flame being collected while Great Arbiter is still alive. Gameplay footage via Esoterickk.

Esoterickk’s video shows the Great Arbiter of Flesh still alive and active while the player reaches the ritual stone and picks up the Gloombound Flame. No boss kill is shown before the pickup, and secondary launch guides also describe running in, grabbing the item, and leaving.

Evidence level: gameplay-observed / video-supported, not a developer-confirmed or official rule. If you are underleveled, treat the arena as dangerous and focus on reaching the pickup safely.

The Gloombound Flame is the key item used to unlock and activate Night Mode, Mortal Shell II’s harder world state.

It is separate from the Slayer Seal. The Slayer Seal is the easier combat option; the Gloombound Flame leads to Night Mode, which increases challenge and adds night-related rewards or encounters. For the broader difficulty comparison, see the Slayer Seal and difficulty guide.

For general combat, Shells, weapons, and exploration context, see the Mortal Shell II gameplay guide.

  1. Go to Fainweald → Widow’s Overlook Beacon → Great Arbiter of Flesh arena. The Gloombound Flame sits next to a ritual stone/stone marker inside the arena. [IMAGE: Gloombound Flame beside ritual stone in Great Arbiter arena]
  2. Pick up the Gloombound Flame. (Launch footage shows this is possible even if the Great Arbiter is still alive — gameplay-observed/video-supported.)
  3. Return to the top of Marrow Keep.
  4. Interact with the LIGHT EXTINGUISHED LANTERN and use the Gloombound Flame to light it. This is required before Thestus will appear.
  5. Summon Thestus at the lantern; when he appears choose CALL FORTH THE NIGHT (the prompt reads “Enable increased difficulty.”) Night Mode is then active.

Confirmed / source-supported:

  • Night Mode increases overall difficulty and adds extra hazards and encounters. This is supported by launch coverage and the existing page evidence.
  • Night Mode can yield more rewards / Gloom and adds night-only content (extra encounters and a night-only merchant are source-supported in launch coverage). Exact multipliers and exact Gloom amounts are not published; avoid treating those numbers as confirmed.
  • The Shrine of Sorrows dungeon is a Night Mode-only dungeon per launch coverage.
  • Seedbearer’s Scripture is a separate Night Mode-only objective requiring Depleted, Thawed, and Faded Glands at the Forgotten Tower — see the existing Seedbearer’s Scripture page (/mortal-shell-ii/seedbearers-scripture/) for its route.

Community-reported discoveries (unconfirmed / anecdotal):

  • Players on community forums report additional night-only small dungeons near Mushroom Village, a night vendor near the abandoned outpost selling Glimpses / Tarstones / thorium, and more overworld enemies or Glimpses around Shell locations. Treat these as player-reported and not developer-confirmed.
  • Some players report unquantified increases to currency/rewards and tougher enemy behavior (reduced stagger, extra moves). These reports conflict and remain anecdotal.
  • Return to the top of Marrow Keep and interact with Thestus. The community and secondary launch coverage indicate Thestus can reverse Night Mode; the specific prompt to SEEK DAYLIGHT is supported by secondary sources but was not locally video-verified. Treat reversal via Thestus as source-supported but label the exact UI text and behavior as secondary-source supported.
  • Do not assume interacting with an unlit lantern alone will summon Thestus; you must use the Gloombound Flame to light the LIGHT EXTINGUISHED LANTERN first.
  • Avoid citing exact reward multipliers or Gloom percentages — those figures are not published in official patch notes and remain unconfirmed.

Evidence and community threads:

Use Night Mode if you want a harder run, more reward pressure, or night-related encounters and content. It makes the most sense once you are comfortable with baseline combat and can survive tougher enemies.

Wait before using it if this is your first exploration pass, if normal combat already feels demanding, or if your only goal is to collect the Gloombound Flame for later. This is an editorial recommendation, not an official rule.

Near Widow’s Overlook in the Great Arbiter of Flesh arena. Look for the glowing pickup beside a ritual stone / stone marker.

Current launch gameplay video evidence says no. The pickup is shown while Great Arbiter is still alive, so you can run in and grab the Gloombound Flame. This is video-supported, not official developer documentation.

Take the Gloombound Flame back to the top of Marrow Keep, interact with LIGHT EXTINGUISHED LANTERN, summon Thestus, then choose CALL FORTH THE NIGHT.

What does Light Extinguished Lantern mean in Mortal Shell 2?

Section titled “What does Light Extinguished Lantern mean in Mortal Shell 2?”

It means the lantern at the top of Marrow Keep has not been lit yet, so you need the Gloombound Flame to interact with it. After lighting it and speaking with Thestus, choose CALL FORTH THE NIGHT to enter Night Mode.

Thestus appears at the top of Marrow Keep after you light the extinguished lantern with the Gloombound Flame.

Yes, Night Mode is toggleable through Thestus. Current secondary launch guides report the return-to-day option as Seek Daylight; this exact option was not locally video-verified in the checked Esoterickk footage.

It increases difficulty, makes enemies more threatening, increases rewards / Gloom, and adds night-related hazards, encounters, merchants, quests, or dungeon-style content. Exact stat and reward numbers are not treated as official on this page.
