Quick Answer
Section titled “Quick Answer”- Location: the Great Martyr’s Blade is at the end of the Martyr’s Prison route, reached through Widow’s Overlook, Holding Cells Dungeon, and related shortcuts.
- Timing: you can get it relatively early — an optional post-Prologue weapon route — but not during the Prologue and not at literal game start.
- Route shape: from Widow’s Overlook, travel toward Mushroom Village Beacon and Blackridge Hamlet, enter the Holding Cells well dungeon, stay on the upper hidden route, then continue into Martyr’s Prison.
- Pickup: after clearing the final chamber enemies, a gated / treasure room opens and you pick up the Great Martyr’s Blade directly. It is not an NPC reward or boss drop in the checked evidence.
Some early-route guides begin after defeating Magdalena and using Ova / Mether’s Breath to clear the required corruption on this path. That timing is transcript-supported, not a universal UI lock confirmed for every save state.
Where is the Great Martyr’s Blade?
Section titled “Where is the Great Martyr’s Blade?”The Great Martyr’s Blade is obtained inside Martyr’s Prison.
Gameplay and transcript evidence place the weapon at the end of a dungeon chain that begins in the open world near Widow’s Overlook and passes through Holding Cells Dungeon before you enter Martyr’s Prison. The game UI confirms MARTYR'S PRISON — DUNGEON on that leg of the route.
Landmarks supported by the current evidence:
- Widow’s Overlook: early open-world beacon; UI confirms
WIDOW'S OVERLOOK — BEACON - Mushroom Village Beacon: routing landmark on the path toward the Holding Cells area (transcript-supported)
- Blackridge Hamlet: overworld stretch before the Holding Cells well (transcript-supported)
- Holding Cells Dungeon: entered through a well; contains the upper-level shortcut route (transcript-supported)
- Gloomshade Grove: optional nearby beacon some guides activate as a closer checkpoint before Martyr’s Prison (transcript-supported)
- Martyr’s Prison: final dungeon containing the weapon pickup (UI-confirmed)
For broader combat context, see the Mortal Shell II gameplay guide. For another early weapon route in the same broad region, see the Axe & Dagger location guide. For a separate early Mammon-route heavy weapon, see the Axatana location guide.
Can you get the Great Martyr’s Blade early?
Section titled “Can you get the Great Martyr’s Blade early?”Yes, relatively early — with conditions.
You can treat this as an early optional weapon route once the open world and the required dungeon path are available. The checked evidence supports these boundaries:
- Not during the Prologue
- Not immediately at game start or in the first minute of a new game
- Not without entering dungeons — the route runs through Holding Cells and Martyr’s Prison
Creator titles such as “super early” or fixed minute counts after the Prologue are marketing / personal timing, not in-game UI facts.
Some guides start the run after defeating Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods, cleansing the post-boss beacon, returning to Marrow Keep, and siphoning collected Ova so Mether’s Breath can clear corruption on the path. Other transcript coverage frames the same corruption clear as needing enough Ova from beacon cleansing without naming Magdalena directly. This page does not state that Magdalena is always mandatory; it records that multiple early-route guides use that sequence.
If the final chamber feels too punishing, the optional Slayer Seal in Marrow Keep is one way to make early combat easier. That is a player-choice tip, not a weapon requirement.
How to reach Widow’s Overlook
Section titled “How to reach Widow’s Overlook”The supported starting landmark for this route is Widow’s Overlook.
Transcript-supported routing from Marrow Keep:
- Reach the open world after the Prologue.
- From Marrow Keep, use the north transporter to reach Widow’s Overlook.
- If you already have closer beacons unlocked, you can resume from the nearest one instead of running the full chain from Marrow Keep.
From Widow’s Overlook, continue east toward Mushroom Village Beacon, then northwest toward the dungeon area associated with the Axe & Dagger route. To the right of that dungeon entrance, corruption on the path can be cleansed with Mether’s Breath once you have enough Ova (transcript-supported).
Continue into Blackridge Hamlet and interact with the well that leads into Holding Cells Dungeon. Some guides also recommend activating Gloomshade Grove as a closer checkpoint before entering Martyr’s Prison; that step is optional routing advice, not a confirmed hard gate for the weapon itself.
The Gloombound Flame route also references the Widow’s Overlook area, but that is a separate Night Mode item — not part of this weapon pickup.
How to get through the Holding Cells hidden route
Section titled “How to get through the Holding Cells hidden route”Inside Holding Cells Dungeon, the supported path uses an upper-level shortcut rather than exploring the full lower floor.
Transcript-supported steps:
- Enter the well dungeon and stay on the upper route — do not drop to the bottom level for this shortcut path.
- Move along the top walkways and platforms toward the right side where possible.
- In the stone corridor with a templar-style knight, find a hidden button / pressure plate behind wooden crates on the right and press it to open a gate.
- Continue through the opened gates and wooden walkway sections.
- Break through wooden crates and follow the stone corridor forward.
- Avoid or sprint past pressure plates that trigger arrow traps (enemies can also trigger them).
- Attack through an illusory wall to open the final corridor shortcut (transcript-supported in Its Shatter coverage).
- Clear or bypass the remaining enemies and reach the rope at the corridor end to climb out of Holding Cells into a new open-world stretch.
This is a normal in-dungeon shortcut / hidden route, not an exploit, glitch, or boss skip. It shortens traversal inside Holding Cells; it does not bypass Martyr’s Prison itself.
How to reach Martyr’s Prison
Section titled “How to reach Martyr’s Prison”After exiting Holding Cells through the well rope, backtrack briefly to the well you emerged from.
Transcript-supported routing:
- Optionally detour to activate Gloomshade Grove so a closer beacon exists if you die later (recommended in multiple guides, not UI-confirmed as required).
- From the exit well, go a short distance up to the right to find the entrance to Martyr’s Prison.
- Enter the prison area, take the lift / elevator down, and interact with the small item / bag on a table that teleports you into the prison cell sequence.
- Break out of the starting cell, clear nearby enemies, and open the next gated section with the wall button / plate.
The prison sequence is a self-contained dungeon leg. Multiple transcripts note you should loot the area while you can because the run may not be easily repeatable after claiming the weapon. Treat that as gameplay-observed advice, not official UI text.
How to get the weapon in the final chamber
Section titled “How to get the weapon in the final chamber”The final chamber in Martyr’s Prison holds the weapon pickup.
What the multi-source evidence supports:
- Opening the last gate leads to a chamber with about three lanky / slim enemies and one large rolling enemy.
- Deal with the room’s enemies — the checked normal-route guides fight them directly.
- After the chamber is cleared, a gated / treasure room opens on the other side.
- Enter that room and pick up the Great Martyr’s Blade on-site.
- The game UI displays
NEW WEAPON ACQUIRED — GREAT MARTYR'S BLADE, and the inventory lists the weapon asGREAT MARTYR'S BLADE.
This is a direct weapon pickup, not an NPC reward or boss drop in the checked evidence.
One creator run in the checked Its Shatter footage picked up the weapon already showing a +4 upgrade level. That is observed in that footage only. This page does not state that every player always receives the Great Martyr’s Blade at +4.
Great Martyr’s Blade after Balance Patch 1
Section titled “Great Martyr’s Blade after Balance Patch 1”Balance Patch 1 increased the Great Martyr’s Blade’s attack damage by 20%. The official notes do not publish a new damage table or change its route, so the acquisition steps above remain current.
The practical change is that the blade’s slower, higher-commitment swings now have a stronger payoff when you can create a safe opening. Old launch wording that calls it simply “weak” is outdated; the +20% buff improves its value, but does not prove it is the best weapon for every Shell, build, or player.
For the full current-patch list, see Balance Patch 1. For the wider roster, use the Weapons guide.
Optional tip for the large rolling enemy
Section titled “Optional tip for the large rolling enemy”DPJ’s gameplay footage shows an optional way to handle the large rolling enemy without a full room fight:
- Kite the lanky enemies and the large enemy into the cell / gate area.
- Run through the gate so it drops and locks the large enemy on the other side.
- Defeat the remaining lanky enemies, then attack the large enemy through the gate until it falls.
This is a player tactic / cheese, not the primary acquisition method and not confirmed as the only way to open the treasure room. GRILLAZ and Its Shatter clear the chamber normally. Use this only if you want an easier fight — it is not required to reach the pickup in the checked normal-route evidence.
Is the Great Martyr’s Blade worth getting early?
Section titled “Is the Great Martyr’s Blade worth getting early?”It is a named heavy weapon you can pick up on an optional early route once the open world and dungeon path are available.
What the evidence supports:
- It expands your early-game weapon options before much of the wider map is fully explored.
- Launch creators built dedicated location routes for it through Martyr’s Prison.
- UI evidence confirms the weapon name and on-site pickup clearly.
What is creator opinion, not game UI fact:
- “best weapon in the game”
- “overpowered” or “one-tapping” claims
- fixed minute counts after the Prologue
- moveset tier rankings or DPS comparisons
If the prison gauntlet is too dangerous, return after more beacon progress or consider easier early tools such as the Slayer Seal before retrying.
Where is the Great Martyr’s Blade?
Section titled “Where is the Great Martyr’s Blade?”At the end of Martyr’s Prison, reached from Widow’s Overlook through Holding Cells Dungeon and the upper-level shortcut route.
Can you get the Great Martyr’s Blade early?
Section titled “Can you get the Great Martyr’s Blade early?”Yes, relatively early after the Prologue once the open-world route and dungeons are accessible — but not during the Prologue and not at literal game start.
Do you have to defeat Magdalena first?
Section titled “Do you have to defeat Magdalena first?”Not confirmed as always mandatory. Multiple early-route guides begin after defeating Magdalena and using Ova / Mether’s Breath to clear corruption, but the checked UI evidence does not state Magdalena as a universal hard lock.
Is there a key, quest, or Shell requirement?
Section titled “Is there a key, quest, or Shell requirement?”Not mentioned in the checked transcripts and not confirmed by the current UI evidence used for this page.
Is the Great Martyr’s Blade always +4 on pickup?
Section titled “Is the Great Martyr’s Blade always +4 on pickup?”No. One checked creator run showed +4 in footage. That is not proof every player always receives +4.
Is the DPJ gate trick required?
Section titled “Is the DPJ gate trick required?”No. It is an optional fight tactic. Normal clears in other checked guides also reach the pickup.
