Vellen, High Lord of Mammon is the boss gate for Lazlo the Justiciar. Reach the High Lord’s Courtyard route, follow the keep or crypt path to the underground arena, and defeat Vellen. After the fight, continue through the chamber behind the arena, interact with Lazlo’s remains, and complete the first Memory sequence. That last step is what makes the Shell permanently available; do not treat the boss kill alone as the complete unlock.

  1. Start from the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon if you have not reached the Courtyard route, then work toward High Lord’s Courtyard.
  2. Activate the High Lord’s Courtyard Beacon and follow the keep/crypt route into the underground area and on to Vellen’s arena.
  3. Defeat Vellen, High Lord of Mammon.
  4. Continue into the last chamber or down the stairs behind the arena, interact with Lazlo’s corpse, and choose the inhabit action if the prompt appears.
  5. Complete Lazlo’s first Memory sequence before treating him as permanently unlocked.

The route names are more reliable than a compass instruction. Current guides disagree on whether the approach is best described as west, southwest, or through a differently named regional area, so this page does not publish coordinates or a rigid room-by-room map.

The stable location claim is the High Lord’s Courtyard / keep / Royal Crypt route in Mammon. GameSpot describes moving west from the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon to High Lord’s Courtyard. Other current guides place the fight below the keep or at the end of the Royal Crypt route, with the High Lord’s Courtyard Beacon as the closest named checkpoint.

Use the Beacons & Fast Travel guide to keep the Courtyard checkpoint active once you reach it. If the underground route is difficult to read through fog of war, the existing Map Fragments guide is the right supporting page; this guide does not add invented map coordinates.

  1. From the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon, push toward High Lord’s Courtyard.
  2. Activate the High Lord’s Courtyard Beacon before committing to the keep route.
  3. Enter the keep or crypt approach and descend through the underground section. The checked guides mention Armored Knights, Coffin Eye Beholders, a long hallway, and an underground cathedral across their descriptions of this route.
  4. Clear or bypass the approach enemies, heal, and preserve enough resources for the arena.
  5. Continue to the large room at the end of the route, where Vellen waits.

The sources do not provide one consistent turn-by-turn path. Treat High Lord’s Courtyard, the keep/crypt route, and Vellen’s underground arena as the dependable landmarks; do not rely on an unverified compass direction or coordinate.

The checked Vellen guides do not agree on his weapon or exact tempo: one describes a spear-wielding, patience-based encounter, while another describes quick scythe combos and a dangerous unblockable attack. The useful common ground is to respect his reach, finish reading the attack string, and take short punish windows rather than forcing a scripted phase rotation.

Read → survive the full string → punish briefly → reset.

  • Do not attack during the first apparent pause if Vellen can still continue the sequence.
  • The overhead slam has a long wind-up in current reporting. A side dodge is one guide’s recommended response because it leaves a possible punish angle, but treat that as a tell-based option rather than a universal rule.
  • Use Hardening or Parrying on normal attacks if those timings are already comfortable for you. If a warning or unblockable attack appears, disengage and create space instead of trading.
  • Break damage and a Riposte can convert a successful defensive read into burst damage. Eredrim is an optional existing route if you already use that Shell; it is not required for the encounter.
  • Some guides report that nearby enemies can be lured into Vellen. That is situational help, not a required mechanic, and it can make the arena harder to read.

Do not copy an exact number of phases, swings, or guaranteed rewards from a single current guide. Those details are not consistently corroborated across the checked sources and may change with patches or progression state.

Defeating Vellen opens the route to Lazlo, but the post-fight interaction still matters:

  1. Finish the Vellen encounter. Wait for the boss state to resolve before leaving the arena.
  2. Continue beyond the arena. Check the last chamber, the room behind Vellen, or the nearby stairs leading farther down—the sources use slightly different labels for the same post-fight destination.
  3. Interact with Lazlo’s remains. Choose to inhabit the Shell when the prompt is shown. Do not assume the Shell was added just because Vellen is dead.
  4. Complete the first Memory sequence. The Shells Guide uses this Memory boundary for a permanent Shell unlock, after which the existing Lazlo guide covers his build and Heat/Overheat playstyle.

If the inhabit prompt is missing, inspect the post-arena chamber and the route behind the boss before retrying the fight. The current evidence supports the body interaction and first Memory as the reliable completion sequence; it does not support treating the boss reward screen as the entire unlock.

What Vellen unlocks—and what he does not

Section titled “What Vellen unlocks—and what he does not”

Vellen is listed in current boss-location coverage as a fight tied to a Shell unlock rather than one of the six Corrupted Gate dungeon bosses. For this route, the relevant result is Lazlo’s remains and Memory sequence, not a newly invented Ova reward or map marker. Continue with the Shells Guide for roster context.

Reach the High Lord’s Courtyard route in Mammon and follow the keep or Royal Crypt path into the underground arena. The broad approach is from the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon; exact compass wording varies across guides.

Do I have to defeat Vellen to unlock Lazlo?

Section titled “Do I have to defeat Vellen to unlock Lazlo?”

The checked sources consistently place Vellen between the player and Lazlo’s remains. Defeat Vellen, then continue into the chamber behind the arena and interact with the Shell.

Does killing Vellen unlock Lazlo automatically?

Section titled “Does killing Vellen unlock Lazlo automatically?”

Not safely. Continue beyond the arena, interact with Lazlo’s remains, and complete the first Memory sequence. That is the conservative permanent-unlock boundary.

Current boss-location coverage lists Vellen separately as a Shell-unlock encounter. This page does not assign him an Ova or Corrupted Gate reward that the checked sources do not establish.

Current guides conflict: one calls him spear-wielding and another describes a scythe. The article avoids turning that unresolved reporting into a fact and focuses on attack tells, spacing, and completed strings.

No specific Shell is established as mandatory. Use the Weapons guide and your preferred defensive timing; Eredrim is an optional recommendation, not a requirement.
