There are nine Shells in Mortal Shell II if you count the prologue Shell: Harros, Tiel, Proxima, Gragu, Eredrim, Smert, Lazlo, Sariel, and Genessa. Harros is available during the prologue but is taken away when that opening section ends. The other eight Shells are permanent unlocks.

For every permanent Shell, the practical loop is:

  1. Reach the Shell’s body or encounter.
  2. Interact with it and complete the first Shell Memory or unlock sequence.
  3. Return to the Shellkeeper at Marrow Keep when you want to raise that Shell’s Bond.
  4. Spend Glimpses on Bonding to open higher perk tiers. Shell-map reveals are a separate Gloom expense after Balance Patch 1.

This page is a route and decision guide, not an objective S/A/B combat tier list. Current sources support a few playstyle and timing recommendations, but not a complete, tested stat comparison for every Shell.

For the side-quest layer that used to be mixed into this hub, see the dedicated NPC questlines guide. It keeps Gorf, Hilga, Gragu, Baghead, Egon, Genessa, and the explicitly incomplete Vlas evidence in one place without changing the Shell unlock routes below.

All Shell locations and unlock conditions (Item 11 coverage retained)

Section titled “All Shell locations and unlock conditions (Item 11 coverage retained)”

Use the region and landmark columns as route anchors. They are intentionally more reliable than invented map coordinates or a single guide’s compass wording.

Shell Region / route anchor What unlocks it Best-supported timing or use case
Harros the Vassal Prologue Given automatically; lost when the prologue ends Tutorial and opening progression only; permanently unavailable after the prologue
Tiel the Acolyte Fainweald, near Widow’s Overlook Find the torch-marked grave, interact with Tiel, then complete the Rash Memory One of the earliest permanent Shells; the available build coverage supports a mobile, evasive playstyle
Proxima the Broodseeker Fainweald, Shattered Beacon near Blackridge Pass Enter the Shattered Beacon, interact with the Unknown Shell, and complete the short Memory sequence Early open-world route shortly after the prologue; the local evidence supports a lightning-lance utility use case
Gragu the Insatiable Fainweald, One-Legged Wolf Tavern Bring the Heart of Vatra from the Temple of Vatra back to Gragu Requires a deeper eastern Fainweald route; keep the temple escape route in mind
Eredrim the Venerable Fainweald, Citadel of Penance Reach and defeat The Warden, then interact with Eredrim A mid-to-late Fainweald target in current guide coverage; no universal damage or survivability ranking is claimed here
Smert the Apostate Fainweald, Prophet’s Rest near Outskirts of Nochte Activate all three blood pools, start The Convert, and defeat the Hierarch A higher-risk, Miracle/time-control-oriented use case in the local route evidence
Lazlo the Justiciar Mammon, High Lord’s Courtyard and the crypt beyond its boss route Defeat Vellen, Lord of Mammon, then reach Lazlo’s remains Later Mammon progression; follow the boss-gated route rather than treating Lazlo as an early detour
Sariel the Endless Mammon, Silent Steps → Chamber of Becoming Destroy all four revival markers, defeat Sariel permanently, then complete the nearby Shell Memory Later Mammon route with a multi-step boss encounter; collect the associated dungeon rewards before leaving
Genessa the Wayward Marrow Keep, then the Mammon route to Sester Secundus Defeat Sester Secundus, return the required item to Genessa, and complete her Memory The most indirect unlock; do not assume the Censer/Chalice naming discrepancy is a different item

Tiel: Widow’s Overlook and the Rash Memory

Section titled “Tiel: Widow’s Overlook and the Rash Memory”

Start from Widow’s Overlook Beacon and follow the local landmarks toward the wooden enclosure and large tree. The shallow grave is marked by two torches. Interact with Tiel, then enter the nearby building through its side window and take the flask from the desk to complete the Rash Memory.

The exact compass description varies between current guides, so use the beacon, enclosure, tree, torches, and grave as the route checks. The local Tiel location guide does not establish defeating the nearby Great Arbiter as a requirement.

Tiel is the clearest early mobility/evasion recommendation in the current evidence: the local guide describes a mobile, Shadow-focused identity, and an independent launch guide places Tiel among the earliest Shells and recommends him for early-to-mid game. That is a use-case recommendation, not proof that Tiel wins every build matchup.

After the prologue, travel from Marrow Keep through the northern transporter to Widow’s Overlook, continue to Blackridge Pass, and look for the elevated Shattered Beacon route. Enter the dungeon and interact with the Unknown Shell.

The locally checked Memory sequence is:

  • Take the Offering
  • Use Biosampler on stranger
  • Answer the Stranger
  • Inform Merrick

The game then displays NEW SHELL DISCOVERED — PROXIMA and allows an immediate switch. The local Proxima guide supports the route as an early post-prologue option and does not show a specific weapon, boss, key, Ova, Mether’s Breath, or Shell requirement. It also records Proxima’s lightning-lance pull utility and a transcript-stated damage-mitigation value; those details come from one walkthrough and should not be treated as a complete balance-tested build.

Find Gragu inside the One-Legged Wolf Tavern and exhaust his dialogue until he asks for the Heart of Vatra. Travel east to the Temple of Vatra, take the Heart from the corrupted statue at the top, use the alternate exit when the route becomes hostile, and return to the tavern.

Giving Gragu the Heart triggers the unlock event and leaves his body available to inhabit. The Gragu guide separates the optional Berserker’s Stone from the Shell objective: it is not required for Gragu.

The route may be inaccessible until wider Fainweald corruption and travel progression has opened. Current local evidence intentionally does not assert a fixed Ova count, so do not treat a reported number as a universal requirement.

Follow the Citadel of Penance route until The Warden encounter. Defeat The Warden, finish the encounter state, and interact with Eredrim to choose the inhabit option. The Eredrim guide supports this direct route without requiring a paid Shell-location hint.

Independent coverage describes Eredrim as a mid-to-late game choice, but the current evidence does not justify filling in a full stat table or calling him objectively strongest. Use Eredrim when the route, timing, and your tested Bond upgrades fit your run; keep the broader build claim provisional.

Use Outskirts of Nochte Beacon as the route anchor for Prophet’s Rest. Activate all three blood pools around the ritual area, then interact with the Unknown Shell to start The Convert. Complete the Memory route and defeat the Hierarch to unlock Smert.

The local Smert guide records two supported ways to activate a pool: kill an enemy inside it or make a Blood Offering. A Blood Offering can eject you from your Shell, so recover it before attempting another sacrifice. Check the pools on arrival rather than assuming all three start empty.

Smert is the clearest current Miracle/time-control use case, but the site does not claim a complete Miracle table or a universal high-risk/high-reward tier position.

Lazlo: Vellen and the High Lord’s Courtyard crypt

Section titled “Lazlo: Vellen and the High Lord’s Courtyard crypt”

In Mammon, use High Lord’s Courtyard as the route anchor. Reach the keep and defeat Vellen, Lord of Mammon; Lazlo’s remains are in the crypt or final chamber beyond that encounter. Interact with the remains and finish Lazlo’s first Memory before treating the Shell as permanently unlocked.

No standalone Lazlo route page is present in this site checkout yet, so this hub keeps the claim at region, landmark, boss, and crypt level. It does not invent a room coordinate, an exact compass path, or Lazlo’s stats/build.

Start at Silent Steps Beacon and follow the outer Sariel route into the Chamber of Becoming. In the final arena, destroy all four revival tablets/markers before expecting a permanent defeat. After the fight, interact with the nearby Unknown Shell and complete Sariel’s Memory; defeating the boss alone is not the complete Shell unlock.

The route also contains the Clockwork Scythe and Caged Hystrix, which are separate rewards. Use the Sariel guide, Clockwork Scythe guide, and Caged Hystrix guide when you want all three objectives.

Genessa: Sester Secundus and the return handoff

Section titled “Genessa: Sester Secundus and the return handoff”

Genessa starts as an NPC in Marrow Keep. Follow the unlock route to the Mammon-side encounter with Sester Secundus, defeat that boss, and return the required item to Genessa in Marrow Keep. Complete Genessa’s Memory and then use the Shell prompt in the training grounds.

Current sources disagree on the returned item’s name: some call it Sester’s Censer, while others call it Sester’s Chalice. The local Sester Genessa guide preserves that conflict. Follow the in-game prompt in the build you are playing rather than assuming the two labels describe separate prerequisites.

Genessa is also the clearest example of a route whose Bonding interaction differs in current coverage: independent launch guides say to raise her Bond by talking to Genessa rather than using the ordinary Shellkeeper flow. Treat that as a supported route-specific instruction, and verify the prompt after the handoff.

Finding the body is not always the same as unlocking the Shell. Current launch guides agree on the following progression model:

  • Interact with the remains or post-encounter Shell prompt.
  • Complete the first Shell Memory or route-specific Memory sequence.
  • The permanent Shell becomes available after that completion, not merely after reaching the landmark.
  • Use Glimpses to raise the Shell’s Bond and open higher perk tiers.
  • Shell-specific abilities/weapons are not the same as shared equipment. Current coverage says Seals, Tarstones, and other shared items can be evaluated across Shells, but local pages do not validate a full cross-Shell build matrix.

The standard Bonding interaction is associated with the Shellkeeper at Marrow Keep. Current coverage treats Genessa as the exception to check in person: her Bonding is described through dialogue with Genessa. See the Glimpses guide for the resource boundary and do not spend Glimpses as if they were ordinary Gloom.

There is no evidence-backed universal tier list in this checkout. The safest useful ranking is by when the route opens and what the available evidence actually supports:

Use case Shells to investigate first Why this is supportable
Earliest permanent options Tiel, Proxima Both are in early Fainweald routes after the prologue; their local location pages are the most developed in this checkout
Mobile/evasive play Tiel Local guide describes a mobile, Shadow-focused identity; an independent launch guide also recommends Tiel for early-to-mid game
Lightning pull utility Proxima Local transcript/UI evidence supports the lightning-lance interaction; it does not establish a complete damage ranking
Miracle/time-control direction Smert Local route evidence describes this identity without claiming a full skill or stat table
Mid-to-late route target Eredrim Independent launch coverage places Eredrim later than Tiel; the exact combat ranking remains unverified
Completionist collection All eight permanent Shells The first Memory is part of the permanent-unlock loop, and Harros remains prologue-only

For a practical first run, choose one early Shell whose movement and ability pattern you can test, then invest Bonding resources after you know you will keep using it. Do not copy a pre-patch or beta “best Shell” list without checking whether it includes the current map-cost and balance changes. The Weapons guide and Slayer Seal guide cover adjacent build variables without pretending that weapon or difficulty choice proves a Shell ranking.

The current evidence supports one concrete starting pairing: Tiel with Axe & Dagger. The Axe & Dagger guide describes Tiel as a practical pairing to test, while the Tiel route supports the mobile, evasive playstyle that makes the combination a reasonable early experiment.

Treat that as route and playstyle advice, not an exclusive or mathematically best build. The other Shells can use the shared weapon roster, but this checkout does not contain controlled testing for a complete Shell-to-weapon matrix. Use the Weapons guide to choose by route, weapon identity, and current patch context.

Use these routes to turn Shell collection into a practical run plan:

  • Fainweald Shell route — the current mapped route for the permanent Shell objectives it covers.
  • World and Progression route — the broader Prologue → Fainweald → Mammon → Unfound Path sequence.
  • Mortal Shell II map — use the map when a Shell or nearby route marker is available; do not treat an unmapped landmark as a verified coordinate.
  • NPC questlines — side-quest timing, handoffs, and current evidence limits.

Harros is a prologue Shell, not one of the eight permanent collection Shells. Current launch guides describe losing him when the prologue ends as irreversible. If you are seeking an all-permanent collection, do not count Harros as a permanent unlock.

For the other eight, current evidence supports persistent collection after the first Memory, but this hub does not claim that every optional dialogue choice, Bond prompt, or alternate ending interaction has identical outcomes. Finish the Memory and confirm the Shell menu before leaving a route.

Do not confuse a route gate with a fixed number

Section titled “Do not confuse a route gate with a fixed number”

Gragu’s eastern Fainweald route may depend on corruption-clearing and broader travel progression. Current local evidence avoids a fixed Ova threshold. Similarly, a paid location reveal and the physical Shell route are different things.

Tiel and Proxima descriptions differ slightly between sources on whether the first turn is described as north, southeast, or a turn from the Beacon. Use the named Beacon, dungeon, enclosure, grave, and boss landmarks. This page does not invent map coordinates.

Genessa’s item name is unsettled in current coverage

Section titled “Genessa’s item name is unsettled in current coverage”

Keep Sester’s Censer / Sester’s Chalice as a deliberate uncertainty until the in-game prompt or a stronger primary source resolves the naming. The unlock dependency—Sester Secundus, return to Genessa, Memory—is the stable part.

Balance Patch 1 moved Shell-map reveals from Glimpses to Gloom and refunds Glimpses previously spent on those reveals at the Shell Keeper’s alcove in Blackmarrow. That matters when planning a collection: map discovery no longer competes with Bonding for the same Glimpse budget.

The patch also changed enemy, weapon, Tarstone, and economy balance. Therefore, old beta or pre-patch “best Shell” claims should be treated as dated opinions unless their test conditions are clear. See Balance Patch 1 and Glimpses for the site’s current resource notes.

There are nine total Shells: Harros is the prologue-only Shell, and Tiel, Proxima, Gragu, Eredrim, Smert, Lazlo, Sariel, and Genessa are the eight permanent Shells.

Start with Tiel or Proxima after the prologue because both have early Fainweald routes. Tiel has the clearest supported mobile/evasive use case; Proxima has the clearest locally documented lightning utility. Neither is confirmed as universally strongest.

Harros is available in the prologue and is lost when the prologue ends. Current launch coverage treats that loss as irreversible. He is not part of the eight permanent Shell collection.

Yes, for the permanent Shell loop. Finding or reaching a body is not the whole unlock: interact with the Shell and complete its first Memory or route-specific unlock sequence, then confirm the Shell becomes available.

Spend Glimpses to raise a Shell’s Bond and unlock higher perk tiers. The standard interaction is at the Shellkeeper in Marrow Keep; current coverage describes Genessa as a dialogue-based exception to check with Genessa herself.

No. This page gives evidence-bounded use cases and progression timing rather than an S/A/B combat ranking. Stats, builds, and performance can change with Bonding, weapons, Seals, Tarstones, and patches.

No. After Balance Patch 1, Shell-map reveals cost Gloom instead, and eligible Glimpses spent on those reveals are refunded in Blackmarrow.
