Mortal Shell II uses four different progression/combat systems. The safest rule is to match the resource to the screen where you spend it:

Resource What it does How you build it Death risk
Gloom Levels the Harbinger at Beacons; after Balance Patch 1, also reveals Shell locations Enemy and boss rewards, world sources, and repeatable combat Current launch coverage says carried Gloom drops on death and can be recovered before another death
Glimpses Raises one Shell’s Bond and opens higher Shell ability tiers and memories Mainly Cleansed Beacons, routes behind Cleansed Gates, rare exploration finds, and limited source-specific rewards Not reported as a death drop; spending on Bond is the lasting decision
Shell Points Buys individual abilities inside Bond tiers that are already open Harbinger level-up milestones paid for with Gloom Allocated points are currently reported as refundable; exact pool behavior is not fully documented
Resolve Powers combat abilities, weapon skills, and some sidearm/Shell effects Refilled through normal combat; successful melee strikes are the clearest cross-source rule Combat meter, not a banked currency or death drop

The short version: Gloom levels you, Glimpses develop a Shell, Shell Points buy that Shell’s available abilities, and Resolve pays for combat actions. They are not interchangeable.

Gloom is the Harbinger-leveling resource. Rest at a Beacon, choose the level-up option, and spend the amount shown by the current progression screen. The next cost and stat result are safer authorities than a fixed online price table because launch balancing can change them.

You mainly build Gloom by fighting. Current launch coverage also describes world sources and repeatable enemy routes, which is why the dedicated Gloom farming guide owns route timings and source-reported returns.

Gloom is the resource to protect before a risky push. If you die, your carried Gloom is left at the death location. You can attempt to recover it, but current launch guides report that a second death before recovery removes the previous drop. Spend at a Beacon when you have enough for a useful upgrade instead of treating a large unspent balance as harmless.

Gloom also reveals Shell locations after Balance Patch 1

Section titled “Gloom also reveals Shell locations after Balance Patch 1”

Balance Patch 1 moved Shell-map reveals from Glimpses to Gloom. The developer’s Balance Patch 1 announcement says that Glimpses spent on those older Shell-map purchases are refunded in the Shell Keeper’s alcove in Blackmarrow.

The practical meaning is narrow but important: do not spend a Glimpse on a Shell-map reveal in the patched flow. Use Gloom for the map purchase and reserve Glimpses for Bonding. The developer post described the PC patch as live first, with console rollout to follow, so check your platform’s current build if the menu still shows older behavior.

Glimpses raise the Bond of a specific Shell. Go to the Shellkeeper/Bonding interaction, select the Shell you want to develop, and use Glimpses to deepen that Bond. Each Bond step opens more of that Shell’s ability rows and can unlock additional Shell memories.

Glimpses are not ordinary Gloom. Current coverage points to these sources:

  • cleansing Beacons;
  • exploring routes behind Cleansed Gates;
  • rare world exploration finds; and
  • limited, source-specific purchases or rewards, including a reported Merrick purchase.

There is no confirmed universal infinite Glimpse farm in the checked launch coverage. Treat a boss, chest, dungeon, or NPC reward as a source-specific lead unless the current game shows the reward directly. The Shells guide covers the body-to-Memory unlock loop; this page covers the resource decision after a Shell is available.

Do not trust a fixed Glimpse total without a build qualifier

Section titled “Do not trust a fixed Glimpse total without a build qualifier”

Current guides disagree on the total economy. One guide calculates 27 Glimpses to max one Shell and 216 for eight; another reports more than 20 per Shell and a little over 90 in one playthrough. Those figures do not reconcile and neither is a developer-published economy table.

Use the reliable decision instead: test a Shell’s playstyle, choose the Shell you expect to use, and spend Bond Glimpses deliberately. The Patch 1 refund only covers Glimpses spent on old Shell-map reveals; it is not evidence that Bond spending is generally refundable.

Shell Points buy individual Shell abilities. They are separate from Glimpses:

  1. Spend Gloom at Beacons to level the Harbinger.
  2. Some Harbinger levels award Shell Points as milestone rewards; they do not appear at every level.
  3. Spend a Glimpse to raise a Shell’s Bond and open a higher ability row.
  4. Spend Shell Points on the abilities inside that unlocked row.

This is a two-key system. A spare Shell Point cannot bypass a Bond gate, and Glimpses do not directly buy Shell Points. Current launch guides report that allocated Shell Points can be refunded and redistributed, while Glimpses spent on Bond remain the more permanent commitment.

Coverage is not consistent enough to promise whether the visible Shell Point pool is shared across every Shell or tracked independently in every menu. The stable practical rule is to select the intended Shell, inspect the current ability screen, and confirm the row and capacity before spending. Do not confuse a refundable ability allocation with a refundable Bond tier.

Resolve is the active combat meter, not an exploration currency. It sits in the combat HUD and refills as you fight. The clearest cross-source rule is that successful melee strikes build it; current combat coverage also reports additional defensive-action interactions, but the exact triggers and amounts are not stable enough to present as a universal table.

Spend Resolve on combat effects such as:

  • weapon skills or special attacks;
  • some Shell abilities; and
  • some sidearm actions or Tarstone effects.

The official Patch 1 notes are direct evidence that the Caged Hystrix and Triarch Repeater previously had minimum Resolve requirements to fire, and that those minimums were removed. The sidearms guide owns the weapon-specific details; this page only establishes the shared resource distinction.

Do not import original Mortal Shell advice automatically. The current Resolve evidence guide recommends checking the meter before and after a combat exchange and explicitly leaves exact controls, fixed rewards, and original-game parry rules unconfirmed for Mortal Shell II. In practice, build Resolve through normal combat, watch the meter, and spend it when the current UI shows a meaningful action is available.

Use the resource that matches the problem in front of you:

Goal Spend / protect Practical choice
Increase core survivability or damage Gloom Return to a Beacon and level before carrying a large balance into a risky route.
Unlock a Shell’s next ability tier Glimpses Bond the Shell you actually plan to play after testing its basic kit.
Activate an ability in an open tier Shell Points Check the current row and capacity; use the reported refund option if you are reshaping the build.
Use a weapon, sidearm, or Shell combat effect Resolve Build it in combat and spend it on the next high-value opening rather than panic-firing.

For Shell routes and Bonding, use the Shells guide. For Gloom loops, use Gloom Farm. For the complete economy change, see Balance Patch 1.

No. Gloom pays for Harbinger levels and, after Balance Patch 1, Shell-map reveals. Glimpses raise a particular Shell’s Bond and open its higher ability tiers.

No. Gloom-funded Harbinger milestones provide Shell Points; Glimpses open the Bond rows where those points can be spent.

Not through a confirmed universal enemy loop. Current coverage treats Glimpses as a scarce progression resource from Beacons, Cleansed Gate exploration, rare world finds, and limited source-specific rewards. More Glimpses may be available in New Game Plus, but the NG+ guide owns the carry-over/reset details.

Carried Gloom is dropped at the death location. Recover it before another death if you want it back; current launch coverage says the next death can erase the previous drop.

Current independent guides report that allocated Shell Points can be refunded. Treat that as the current guide-supported behavior and follow the refund prompt in your build. Do not assume the Glimpses used to open Bond tiers are refunded with them.

No separate pickup or vendor is established by the checked evidence. Treat Resolve as the combat meter: build it through combat and confirm the gain on the HUD before spending it.

Is there a fixed number of Glimpses per run?

Section titled “Is there a fixed number of Glimpses per run?”

Not one this page can safely publish. Current guides disagree on per-Shell costs and one-run totals, so use the live Bond prompt and do not treat an online total as universal across builds or patches.

This is an evidence-bounded launch-window resource guide. It intentionally does not provide a complete Glimpse location database, a fixed total Glimpse count, a full Shell Point milestone table, exact Resolve costs/refill rates, or an Item 19 NPC questline list. Those claims require stronger in-game or developer-published evidence than the checked sources provide.
