Mortal Shell II does not consistently present side quests as a complete journal. The reliable loop is: exhaust the current dialogue, record the exact requested item or choice, rest once at a Beacon, return to the NPC, and confirm the next state before resting again. The launch coverage below supports full or near-full routes for Gorf and Hilga, the Grisha Pup camp, Gragu, Baghead, Egon, and Genessa. Vlas has a verified opening request but a disputed later route, so this page stops rather than importing an unverified walkthrough.

NPC or chain Start point Completion checkpoint Reward, consequence, or uncertainty
Gorf + Hilga + Grom Gorf north of Widow’s Overlook; Hilga’s camp east of Mushroom Village Beacon Give the Poisoned Dagger to Hilga, give Gorf Common Moonshine, then use the final Beacon-rest visits until the toads appear Up to five Marsh Pearls are reported; do not skip Hilga’s earlier scenes before the dagger handoff
Grisha Pup + Hunter Hunter camp in Mushroom Village Buy what you need, open the cage, return after a rest, and collect the follow-up reward Sheephead Totem immediately and two Glimpses later; buy the Hunter’s Grisha Remnant first because the camp’s shop state becomes unsafe to rely on
Gragu One-Legged Wolf Tavern Retrieve the Heart of Vatra from the Temple of Vatra and hand it back Unlocks Gragu’s Shell; collect optional temple rewards before taking the Heart
Baghead Desolate Peak, by the Illusionist’s Cache route Inspect the Special Moonshine and note, put it back, then return empty-handed and confirm the “nothing” choice Bag Holder secret ending/credits sequence; treat it as an ending trigger, not a normal mid-run hand-in
Egon Central tower of Castigator’s Keep Feed Gloom in repeated offerings until the completion scene Current coverage conflicts on the threshold; 20,000 total and a 40,000 return are the conservative figures, but confirm the in-game prompt
Sester Genessa Marrow Keep, then the Sester Secundus route Recover the required item, defeat Sester Secundus, return it to Genessa, and complete her Memory Item name conflicts as Sester’s Censer / Sester’s Chalice; the handoff and Memory are the stable parts
Vlas Injured beside a broken cart in the Outskirts of Mammon Only the missing-cat request is consistently documented in the bounded sources Later movement, key, cat, and reward steps conflict; keep this route explicitly incomplete
Zhirelle / Thestus Marrow Keep These are system-state interactions rather than ordinary item questlines Zhirelle handles Shell discovery/Bonding; Thestus toggles Night Mode after the Gloombound Flame sequence

Use this order when you want to reduce avoidable lockouts and skipped scenes:

  1. Before opening the Grisha Pup’s cage, buy the Hunter’s Grisha Remnant and any other stock you want. Sources differ on whether the trader is described as dead or simply unavailable afterward; the stable rule is not to rely on the shop after the camp turns hostile.
  2. Finish Hilga and Grom’s available dialogue before giving Hilga the Poisoned Dagger. Current walkthroughs report that the handoff advances her story and can skip scenes that have not been viewed. Rest once between checks rather than stacking multiple rests.
  3. For Gragu, take the Berserker’s Stone and other optional Temple of Vatra rewards before removing the Heart of Vatra from the statue. The Heart handoff is the Shell unlock; the optional loot is a separate objective.
  4. Treat Baghead as an ending choice. Activate a nearby Beacon and finish any current-cycle work you care about before confirming the empty-handed request.
  5. Do not spend all Gloom on Egon until the prompt is clear in your build. The total reported by current sources is inconsistent, even though the repeated-donation loop and completion scene agree.
  6. Finish active NPC routes before Send Ova / New Game Plus. Current progression coverage treats world-side quests as current-cycle work; do not assume an unfinished NPC state will carry over.

If an NPC appears stuck, exhaust every line, rest at the nearest Beacon once, and return. Walking away without resting is not a reliable reset for Gorf, Hilga, or other stateful encounters. After a hand-in, check the NPC’s new location or note before performing another reset. Preserve the exact item name shown by the game; similarly named keys, weapons, censers, and chalices are not interchangeable by default.

Gorf, Hilga, and Grom: the linked Fainweald chain

Section titled “Gorf, Hilga, and Grom: the linked Fainweald chain”

Start with Gorf, the coughing toad north of Widow’s Overlook Beacon, then work through Hilga and Grom’s camp east of Mushroom Village Beacon. This is one linked chain, not two independent errands.

The stable sequence across current coverage is:

  1. Exhaust Gorf’s dialogue and answer the first item request, beginning with a Weltcap in the checked launch guides.
  2. Rest at the nearby Beacon and return after each state change. Later visits use Common Moonshine in the current evidence set; the exact number of early mushroom/moonshine requests is described differently across walkthroughs.
  3. Continue checking the clearing until Gorf’s injury sequence produces the Poisoned Dagger. Do not sell or discard it: the item description points to a knowledgeable local, which is Hilga.

Current reporting describes up to five Marsh Pearls across the full route, with each Pearl selling to Merrick for 2,000 Coins. Treat that as launch-guide evidence rather than a formal in-game reward table; confirm each inventory change before the next reset.

Visit Hilga and Grom in the fenced camp east of Mushroom Village. Exhaust their available dialogue and scenes before handing over the Poisoned Dagger. Give Hilga the dagger, rest once, and return to find her note or changed position. Follow it back to Gorf, give him the requested Common Moonshine, then rest and revisit the clearing.

The reported completion state is: Gorf recovers, Hilga changes form and joins him, and a final rest reveals four young toads in the clearing. That scene is the practical confirmation that the paired chain has stopped advancing. If the chain stalls, check the nearby corruption/travel gate and the exact prompt; one current guide reports that access near Hilga can depend on having enough Ova for Mether’s Breath, but this page does not convert that report into a fixed universal threshold.

The Grisha Pup is in a Hunter camp in Mushroom Village, near the Hall of Illusions route. Before opening the cage, speak with the Hunter trader and buy the Grisha Remnant and any consumable stock you want. The cage can be opened by buying the key, defeating the Hunters for it, or breaking the padlock with a melee attack; the free lock-break route is the lowest-cost option, but it turns the camp hostile.

Interact with the freed Pup to receive the Sheephead Totem, then rest at a Beacon and return. Current launch coverage reports a follow-up interaction that gives two Glimpses and places the Grisha Matron in the camp. Do not attack before collecting that follow-up reward. The sources disagree in how they describe the trader’s final state, so the actionable certainty is simply: buy the shop’s unique stock before opening the cage.

Speak to Gragu inside the One-Legged Wolf Tavern until he asks for the Heart of Vatra. Travel to the Temple of Vatra east of the tavern, collect the optional rewards first, take the Heart from the corrupted statue, survive the ambush through the side route, and return to Gragu. Handing over the Heart completes the NPC handoff and unlocks Gragu’s Shell.

The existing Gragu guide owns the route-specific details. This page keeps the questline boundary clear: the Berserker’s Stone and other Temple rewards are optional loot, while the Heart is the actual Gragu objective. The exact corruption/travel gate for reaching the eastern route remains deliberately unquantified in the existing evidence.

Find Baghead at Desolate Peak, on the route in front of the Illusionist’s Cache dungeon. Exhaust his dialogue, sit with his followers when prompted, inspect the Special Moonshine and the nearby note, and then put the Special Moonshine back. Return to Baghead with empty hands and confirm that you are giving him nothing.

That choice triggers the Bag Holder joke ending and rolls the credits. Current coverage reports that the run can continue afterward, but this is still an ending trigger rather than a routine reward hand-in. Make a Beacon/save checkpoint and finish any other current-cycle NPC, Shell, or trophy work first. See the Endings guide for the separate main-ending boundary.

Egon is in the central tower of Castigator’s Keep. He accepts repeated 1,000-Gloom offerings and stores progress between visits. The strongest convergent current reporting says that reaching 20,000 Gloom total causes Egon to pass away and returns 40,000 Gloom, for a net gain of 20,000.

There is a real launch-source conflict: one guide reports a 10,000-Gloom cap, while newer guides report 20,000. Do not treat either number as an official patch note. Use 20,000 as the conservative amount to plan for, make offerings in increments, and trust the completion scene/prompt in the build you are playing. The related trophies guide keeps the reward threshold marked as source-dependent.

Vlas: verified opening, unverified later chain

Section titled “Vlas: verified opening, unverified later chain”

The bounded sources place Vlas injured beside a broken cart in the Outskirts of Mammon. He asks for help finding his missing cat. The unofficial Mortal Shell II database labels the chain A Sweet Boy and begins with recovering Vlas’s wares, while another current walkthrough claims a later cage-and-key route. Those accounts do not establish one reproducible, corroborated sequence.

Therefore, the reliable instruction is limited: exhaust Vlas’s opening dialogue, note the exact request and location, rest and return when the game gives you a reason to recheck him, and do not promise a cat location, final reward, missable cutoff, or completion state from the conflicting guides. This page intentionally stops at the verified opening rather than importing first-game Vlas behavior or a single-source sequel route.

Genessa, Zhirelle, and Thestus: NPC systems with quest consequences

Section titled “Genessa, Zhirelle, and Thestus: NPC systems with quest consequences”

Genessa is both an NPC and a permanent Shell. Follow the Sester Genessa guide to the Sester Secundus encounter, recover the required handoff item, return it to Genessa in Marrow Keep, and complete her first Memory. Current sources call that item Sester’s Censer or Sester’s Chalice; keep both names visible and follow the in-game prompt instead of treating the discrepancy as two separate requirements.

Genessa’s Bonding interaction is also an exception in current coverage: check Genessa/Stray Sester in person rather than assuming every Shell uses the standard Zhirelle flow. The route is complete when the Shell prompt and first Memory are available, not merely when Sester Secundus is defeated.

Zhirelle is a system NPC, not a conventional item quest. She can reveal most Shell locations and handles Bonding for the permanent Shell roster. After Balance Patch 1, Shell-location reveals use Gloom rather than Glimpses in the checked PC coverage, while Glimpses remain the scarce Bond resource. The Shells guide keeps the roster and Bonding details in one place.

Thestus likewise changes the world state instead of paying out a normal side-quest reward. The existing Gloombound Flame guide documents the bounded sequence: obtain the Gloombound Flame, place it at the Marrow Keep lantern/brazier, then speak with Thestus to Call forth the Night. Night Mode is reversible through Thestus and is not a universal prerequisite for NPC questlines.

Do NPC questlines carry into New Game Plus?

Section titled “Do NPC questlines carry into New Game Plus?”

Treat current-cycle NPC scenes, hand-ins, and ending choices as work to finish before New Game Plus. Do not assume an unfinished NPC state will carry over unless the game explicitly confirms it.

What should I do if an NPC quest is stuck?

Section titled “What should I do if an NPC quest is stuck?”

Exhaust the current dialogue, rest once at a nearby Beacon, return, and verify the next prompt. Keep conflicting item names and later steps separate instead of substituting a similar-looking item.
