  1. Get your bearings: run the opening controls, learn Guard/Harden/heal inputs, and note your immediate Beacon(s).
  2. Activate the nearest Beacon (for cleansing/save/Gloom spending). See Beacons & Fast Travel for the Beacon distinction.
  3. Try one Shell and one early weapon briefly to see playstyle fit—you can swap later. See Shells and Weapons.
  4. Look for an obvious healing upgrade pickup or vendor option and read the Healing Upgrades guide before spending resources.

  • Skipping the Prologue is an optional beta unlock that requires progress past Marrow Keep — it is not the default first-playthrough choice. If you skip, you bypass two confirmed Prologue trophies: “Mid Summer?” and “No, You Still Can’t Win.” Details and requirements: Skip Prologue.
  • Recommendation: pick a Shell route you understand or one you’ve tried before. The site’s Shells guide owns route advice and warns against a universal tier list—start with a comfortable route and learn its mechanics.
  • Recommendation: use a familiar early weapon to learn enemy timing rather than chasing an alleged “best” weapon. The Weapons guide hosts the full launch weapon list and route status.
  • Harden and Guard are your defensive toolkit: practice timing Harden/Guard to reduce or avoid damage. Healing is limited early—learn the heal action and prioritize the first meaningful healing upgrades. The detailed pickup list and upgrade paths for Revered Glands and Synaptic Vessels are covered in Healing Upgrades.
  • Gloom is spent at Beacons. Early players should prioritize upgrades that the Tarforge and Tarstones guides recommend for early progression.
  • The site avoids prescribing one universal spending order; follow the Tarforge/Tarstones progression pages for exact thresholds and recommended parts.
  • Beacons serve multiple functions: activation (save/respawn), cleansing, spending Gloom, and fast travel. There are distinctions between activating, cleansing, and travel behavior—read the full breakdown at Beacons & Fast Travel.
  1. Healing stability: make sure you can reliably heal and consult Healing Upgrades for exact pickups.
  2. Weapon/temper progression: use the Tarforge and Tarstones guides for early tempering and Tarcore decisions.
  3. Quality-of-life: small defensive or mobility upgrades that let you survive more fights often pay off early—consult the linked upgrade guides before committing.

Note: do not expect one fixed priority; the Tarforge and Tarstones pages contain the precise upgrade parts, Temper Tarstones, Tarcores, XP, and thresholds.

  • Safer early loops for Gloom are reported at Widow’s Overlook or Sunken Village — see Gloom Farm for routes and tips. Gloombound Stone improves Gloom drops when you have it; plan farm loops around safety and Beacon access.
  • Trying to skip the Prologue immediately — skipping is an option but it removes two confirmed Prologue trophies and requires later progress (Skip Prologue).
  • Swapping Shells or weapons constantly before learning their timing — pick a familiar Shell/weapon to learn basics first (Shells, Weapons).
  • Spending Gloom without checking Tarforge/Tarstones progression — consult Tarforge and Tarstones before committing.
  • Ignoring Beacons — they are your hub for healing upgrades, spending Gloom, and fast travel. See Beacons & Fast Travel.
  • Over-farming unsafe routes early — prefer Widow’s Overlook or Sunken Village loops for early Gloom attempts (Gloom Farm).
  • The site’s recommended broad spine is: Prologue → Marrow Keep → Fainweald → Corrupted Gates → Mammon → Unfound Path. This is a recommended sequence, not a strict requirement. See the world progression route for details.
  • Useful next pages: Map, Bosses, Trophies, and New Game Plus.
